THE AUTHOR

Ben Klotz earned his Ph.D. in economics from the University of Minnesota in 1969 while working at the RAND Corporation. A key analyst during the shift from conscription to an all-volunteer force, he warned early that the new model might become a dangerous overused tool. Later a professor at Temple University, Klotz has spent decades studying the economic and strategic costs of America’s wars. In 2018, he turned to poetry to explore the roots of militarism and the promise of peace. He lives in Washington, DC, where he continues to advocate for a universal national service system inspired by Eisenhower.
